Councillor grant scheme awards £105,000 to local causes in South Oxfordshire.

Local biodiversity and wildlife projects are among a huge range of good causes that have benefitted from over £100,000 in grant funding from their South Oxfordshire district councillor.

The South Oxfordshire District Council Community Grant Scheme launched last November and has awarded a total of £105,000 to 91 local community groups, charities and town/parish councils, many of which are in great need of additional financial support as a result of the impact of Covid-19.

As a part of this scheme every South Oxfordshire district councillor is given £5,000 to help fund projects in their ward.

Applicants for this latest Community Grant were encouraged to think about funding for projects that would contribute to the district council’s Corporate Plan priorities, in particular to protect and restore our natural world; action on the climate emergency and improved economic and community well-being.

As well as biodiversity and wildlife projects, the fund has benefited schemes that improve mental health and wellbeing through bringing people together and family focussed projects giving children access to free play and activities.

Cllr Maggie Filipova-Rivers South Oxfordshire Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “The charities, groups and causes benefitting from this fund are close to the hearts of our communities and are making a real difference to the lives of our residents and the local natural environment. We’ll be offering more financial support through these councillor grants later in the year.”
