Art, theatre, music and crafts celebrate women this March
Celebrate women from all walks of life through a mixture of art, theatre, music, and crafts at Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot from 5-9 March, centred around International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March.
The celebrations start on Tuesday 5 March, with art from emerging artist Usha dapur Kar from Oxford in her first solo exhibition ‘Ferocious Grace’. Through a series of 30 paintings Usha communicates the profound impact of institutional racism in the workplace for woman of colour. Her exhibition is free to view in the gallery at Cornerstone and will be available to view until Saturday 27 April.
As SHE Likes It, a play inspired by #MeToo pioneer Patricia Douglas will be on stage at Cornerstone on Wednesday 6 March at 7.30pm. Through a fusion of live theatre and filmed footage, As SHE Likes It exposes the cultural legacy of sexism and exploitation that still haunts the Hollywood industry to this day. A darkly comedic explosion of multimedia, verbatim, cabaret and drag; a contemporary Brechtian-style play, that’s guaranteed to keep you entertained throughout.
Pop Divas Live! Is at Cornerstone on Saturday 9 March at 2pm for young pop music fans. This is the UK’s number one family friendly pop concert experience, that will no doubt get everyone singing and dancing along to their favourite tunes. This fun-packed show will include family friendly choreography as well as songs featuring incredible female artists.
As well as art, theatre, and music the week celebrates women with a chance to take part in some crafting that both adults and children can enjoy. Drop in at any time on Saturday 9 March between 11am-2pm where women can celebrate themselves and acknowledge how great they’re doing by decorating a superhero mask to wear with pride! This arty session is free and there’s no need to book.
Cllr Maggie Filipova-Rivers, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing at South Oxfordshire District Council, which owns and runs Cornerstone, said: “We’re excited to have a week of a variety of events to celebrate women of all walks of life. The mixture of art, theatre, music, and crafts means that there is something for everyone to enjoy. I’m really looking forward to it.”
