Work to start installing EV chargers in Henley

Work is set to begin on the Park and Charge Electric Vehicle charging scheme in Henley this month.

Engineers will begin installing chargers at Greys Road and Kings Road car parks this week and next. These are the third and fourth of South Oxfordshire District Council’s car parks where EV chargers are being installed as part of the scheme. They follow Cattlemarket and Goldsmith’s Lane car parks in Wallingford where work has already been agreed.

The Park and Charge scheme proposes a total of up to 62 new charging points in car parks across the South Oxfordshire district.

The installation work will involve several bays being fenced off temporarily and some short-term disruption to the car park.

The council will announce the rest of the work to be done as part of this project in South Oxfordshire shortly. All work is due to be completed by the end of March.

Councillor Sue Cooper, South Oxfordshire District Council Cabinet member for Environment, Climate Change and Nature Recovery, said: “It is good to see the expansion of this project across South Oxfordshire so people in different areas can make full use of the EV chargers being installed whether they be visitors to the town or local residents who do not have access to charging facilities at home.”

Cllr Ken Arlett, South Oxfordshire District Council ward member for Henley, said: “This is great news for Henley in a number of ways. It is good news for EV owners visiting the town to know they have a choice of places to charge their vehicles. It is also good news for residents looking to change to EVs in the future. And, of course, all of this should mean good news for the air quality in the town.”

This work is part of a county-wide scheme to install hundreds of EV charging points in council-owned car parks. More info here.

The Park and Charge scheme allows residents without off-street parking to park overnight and charge up using a ‘fast’ 7 – 22kw EV charging point. The chargers will also provide much needed battery top-ups to commuters and visitors during the daytime.
