Leader’s statement – 12 October 2023
Cllr David Rouane, Leader of South Oxfordshire District Council, delivered his Leader’s statement to Council at the meeting on Thursday 12 October 2023.
Earlier this week we marked World Homelessness Day and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our team for the tireless work that they do in this area.
The impact of the cost-of-living crisis has led to record levels of homelessness nationally, stretching housing needs services across the country. The demand for homelessness assistance in the area rose by 12 per cent in 2022/23. We are working harder than ever to support residents at risk of homelessness.
The councils’ housing needs team identifies those at risk of homelessness and works closely with them helping them remain safely at home or securing them suitable alternative accommodation. In 2022/23, our team prevented 80.6% of households at risk of becoming homeless from actually becoming homeless, compared to a national figure of 52.8%.
This is in addition to the team’s continued help for refugees as part of the UK’s humanitarian duties to assist those fleeing war.
Next week is Recycle Week and a chance to remember that even without using seven separate recycling bins, our residents are amongst the best recyclers in the country. There will be messages throughout the week as part of our Check it before you chuck it campaign to help people to know how to recycle more.
The deadline for Community Grants is 20 October. This is an opportunity for local members to use their local knowledge to support community groups in their area.
And finally, a reminder that 19 October is Oxfordshire Day. The council will be flying the flag as usual.
